How NYC Mesh Pays for Infrastructure

We have been asked: “How does Community Infrastructure Funding work?”

NYC Mesh, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, funds its infrastructure through a multi-faceted approach that combines member contributions, donations, grants, and volunteer labor. This model allows them to provide affordable and equitable internet access to New Yorkers.

Here’s a breakdown of how NYC Mesh pays for its infrastructure:

The following are examples of how you can do Community Infrastructure Funding.

Member Contributions

Installation Fees: New members typically pay an installation fee that covers the cost of the equipment, such as routers and antennas. There are different payment options, including a full-cost option, a subsidized option, and an installment plan.

Monthly Donations: While there is no compulsory monthly fee, members are encouraged to make a recurring monthly donation. These donations are a primary source of funding for network maintenance, upgrades, and expansion.

Donations and Grants

Corporate and Individual Donors: NYC Mesh receives support from both corporate and individual donors. This includes donations of gigabit hardware like switches, servers, and routers.

Grants: The organization has received grants from entities like the Internet Society (ISOC) and Mozilla. They actively apply for grants to support their community internet projects.

Volunteer-Based Model

Free Labor: A significant part of NYC Mesh’s sustainability comes from its dedicated team of volunteers who handle installations, maintenance, and network expansion. This volunteer labor helps keep operational costs low.

Community Involvement: Members are encouraged to get involved in the community, which fosters a sense of ownership and shared responsibility for the network.

Strategic Partnerships and Cost-Saving Measures

Peering Agreements: NYC Mesh connects directly to internet exchange points (IXPs), allowing them to peer with other networks and access the internet without paying traditional ISP fees.

Donated Resources: The organization benefits from donated bandwidth and does not rent office or storage space, with volunteers often storing equipment in their own apartments.

Leased Fiber: In some cases, NYC Mesh leases “dark” fiber to provide high-speed connections where wireless links are not feasible.

By combining these funding sources and operational strategies, NYC Mesh has created a sustainable model that allows them to pursue their mission of ending the digital divide and providing a neutral, community-owned internet alternative in New York City.
