Commons-based peer production (CBPP) has the potential to disrupt centralised capitalist production and state management through the decentralised use of the Internet and open-source technologies.
Blockchain is open-source software and, as such, it belongs to the digital commons. Smart contracts developed on top of layer 1 (protocol) of Blockchains enable the creation of decentralised applications such as distributed autonomous organisations (DAOs), which are controlled by the organisation members according to the pre-agreed rules of the smart contract. DAOs are an assemblage of online peer-to-peer communities that seek to coordinate for a common purpose without the need for a central authority.
