I have seen many articles coming from Pew that have been of interest. Here is the most recent:

Getting access to broadband services remains a challenge for many residents of affordable rental housing. Though these properties are often in areas that have high-speed internet service, physical access and cost may keep households offline. Older buildings, for example, may have never been wired for in-unit service, or may be in neighborhoods where infrastructure has not been upgraded. The available service, meanwhile, may be difficult for many residents to afford, creating another barrier to home broadband subscriptions.

We need to begin making some contacts and finding out more about their funding. Ask Me Anything! With Kathryn de Wit, Project Director with the Pew Charitable Trusts. Here she is on the Broadband Community video, ask me anything:

Detroit Finds New Digital Equity Lead – click the link to read the article.

Detroit has named Christine Burkette as the city’s new digital equity director. Burkette, a native of Detroit, comes to the role with a mix of experience in the public and private sectors. She is the founder of the IT firm Promising Integrations Consulting Firm Inc., which the city noted in its press release is to date the only female- and Black-owned IT consulting firm in all of Michigan. Burkette also served as the CIO for Detroit Public Schools from 2017 to 2018. She has also done tech work with General Motors. The city’s announcement said that Burkette will work with the Detroit City Council to create a digital equity strategy that is greatly informed by input from the city’s residents, pushed forward by a data-driven approach. She plans to continue partnering with Connect 313 on the work, as well as with local industry and philanthropic leaders.

Some great points are made in these articles: the entry barriers to high-speed internet in low-income neighborhoods are not just about affordability, but also about lack of infrastructure, and in varying, non-uniform degrees. This makes a technology like Althea ideal for such implementations, as it levels the field without relying on the aging infrastructure.
