Yousef Rabhi (Challenger; Democratic Socialist)
Rabhi, a Washtenaw County commissioner and former Michigan House of Representatives Democratic floor leader, is challenging Taylor on a Democratic Socialist platform, decrying what he describes as Ann Arbor’s current trajectory of becoming “a country club town.”
His game plan to address housing affordability is to expand the Housing Commission and invest in publicly owned, permanently affordable housing, including community land trusts and cooperative housing associations. He says he’s ideologically opposed to the privatization of public services—citing the examples of the city contracting out commercial garbage collection, tree pruning, and compost services—as well as the sale of city assets to for-profit entities. Of the current administration’s pro-development stance, he says, “They spent millions of dollars to hire out-of-town consultants, and we have over 100,000 consultants in our own community: it’s our residents who know how this community operates.”
Rabhi also aims to be more confrontational with the Trump administration. “We are living in a time not just of a fascist president that is bearing down on our community, but a rising oligarchy of wealthy billionaires that are accumulating more and more wealth and resources,” he says. “We need a mayor who is willing to not just say that we are opposing the Trump administration, but to take actions that may put us in an uncomfortable position, that may require us to go to court and spend public resources to defend those decisions from the Trump administration.” He was part of the anti-ICE policy that prompted the White House to sue Washtenaw County in April.
